Growing Wine

Growing wine at Karikari is demanding because of the tough nature of the climate and soils.

The only ‘easy’ aspect of viniculture here is the ideal temperature that seems to influence the mature flavours and fine natural balance of the wines. Otherwise it is a struggle to improve natural fertility in the soils, manage water and the environment, cope with the winds and occasional heavy tropical downpours.

A different set of problems from most New Zealand winegrowing locations, a set that demands our vineyard whänau are always sensitive to the voice of the land.
